Because God is all-seeing and knowing, walking in humility is the only way we can live in community and support of each other. There is a great need to show reverence to God because of His all-knowing presence in our lives. We can only present our authentic selves in the midst of others. To do less than is to not show reverence for and to God.
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
